Fernando TorresCommon wisdom has Lionel Messi of Barcelona in course for the World Footballer of the year award, but Fernando Torres won’t be a bad choice either. If the Spaniard isn’t yet the World’s best striker then he is getting so close to it. The Spaniard’s decisive goals, often from the slenderest of openings make Spain as one of the favorites heading for the World Cup in South Africa next June. Torres’s latest mesmerizing goal against Liverpool’s rival club Manchester United had the hypnotic effect of making us forget the star who shifted from the English Premier League to Real Madrid this summer, Christiano Ronaldo.

For all Criticism on Liverpool’s manager Rafa Benitez’s recruitment of bringing in 70 or more players in his five seasons of charge and the club paid a record fee for Torres in 2007 was the best 20.3 million Euros that Benitez ever spent. Without Torres Liverpool will look ordinary, but when he is there they can be sensational. Torres can get goals at decisive moments for his team. He is now the leading goal scorer in the English Premier League with 9 goals in 9 matches. Even his more impressive was his 34 goals in 35 home games at Anfield.
